Mathew Perry: Mental Health Awareness
The superstar of the Friends show — Mathew Perry was found dead in his room on Sunday. A few years back an Indian actress Sridevi was also found dead by drowning in a bathtub.
The one thing that has completely baffled me is when people question their intent for committing suicide. This question is discussed the most in the third world, developing countries. As much as I understand where it is coming from, I think it is essential for everyone to understand materialistic success is just a part of life, it can not eradicate mental illness. Mental illness can happen to anyone, irrespective of their social strata.
It is of the utmost importance to talk about mental health as much as possible. To make it normal. One of my friends is going through depression, and he is aware of it but he does not want to seek professional help. This reluctance stems from a lack of awareness and the need to normalize these discussions. We seldom think twice about consulting a medical professional when we experience persistent physical ailments such as headaches or stomachaches.
In one of the interviews, Perry says that it is very difficult for him to watch the episodes of Friends because, in each of the episodes, he is addicted to something. Alcohol, cocaine, and Vicodin are some of the things that were in the list, and he adds that every time he watches the show, he is reminded of that time.
It is high time we extend the same level of care and concern to mental health, recognizing its significance and encouraging individuals to seek the help they need without hesitation.
