Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer
Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is a biological female who was born with a condition called differences of sex development (DSD). Despite having XY chromosomes and testosterone levels typically found in males, Khelif identifies as a woman and was assigned female at birth.Khelif’s participation in women’s boxing has sparked controversy, with some incorrectly labeling her as a “biological male” or “transgender”.
However, these characterizations are oversimplified and scientifically inaccurate, as DSD can cause a discrepancy between an individual’s chromosomes and their physical characteristics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that Khelif meets all competition and medical regulations, asserting that “every person has the right to practise sport without discrimination”.
The Algerian Olympic Committee has also defended her participation, condemning the “malicious attacks” and underscoring her right to compete. While Khelif’s situation has reopened broader discussions on gender eligibility in sports, it is important to recognize the complexities and avoid perpetuating stigma by oversimplifying her identity. The focus should remain on promoting fairness and inclusion for all athletes, regardless of their biological profile.
